Call me crazy but… WHY the CREATIVE rEvolution?!?
When I started writing Profit First for Creatives, it was for traditional marketing reasons. We wanted exposure and credibility in our target market. But a funny thing happened along the way. As I interviewed clients for the book, and I reflected on my own entrepreneurial journey, I realized I was also telling my story. Let me explain.
I was first called an artist by eminent Perry Marshall at a one of his live events in Dallas. He proceeded to explain that entrepreneurs were either builders or artists. Artists are driven by passion. Although I initially recoiled at the moniker, after contemplating his description, I reluctantly agreed. Why did I resist the term artist? If the word had been replaced by creator, I would have agreed. Artist was some guy with a beret and a paintbrush, and that guy was NOT me.
As I wrote my book, I further embraced the definition of creative entrepreneur. Although my business (CORE Group) was not what anybody would consider to be a creative industry, I was driven by passion, a passion to help business owners with their finances. And I realized as I was writing the book, that I shared many common traits with my clients and fellow creatives.
A year after the book was published, I contemplated next moves. How else could I serve a segment of business owners that fundamentally struggled with the business and financial aspects of their passion? How could I help them turn their Passion into Profit?
Over the last several months, percolating in my brain was this framework, a framework I now call The Profitable Creative Framework. I distilled the key elements of what it takes to have successful, profitable, business driven by passion. Drum roll please:
1. Entrepreneurial Mindset- Being an entrepreneur requires a shift in mindset from being and employee or even self-employed. This mindset will not abide scarcity beliefs. It demands a willingness to be 100% accountable for your success. It calls to introspection about ourselves, because our business is a direct by product of our beliefs and values.
2. Clear Value- A business will succeed in direct proportion to the clarity of their understanding of the problem they solve AND the value their solution brings. The vast majority of business owners, myself included, will resist this clarity because it requires us to narrow our focus. Narrowing is scary, because we think that we are limiting our opportunities. In fact, by NOT narrowing our focus to one problem we solve (maybe two or three related) we cannot completely SOLVE the problem. This causes us to stall growth.
3. Systems- To most creative entrepreneurs this is word is an anathema. We don’t want to be restricted by processes and procedures. That’s what big companies do, and it restricts our flow. Sorry, this is 100% incorrect. Systems, be they operational or financial give us the structure we need to have space for creativity. Chaos does not engender flow.
4. Marketing- I’ve recently coined the phrase “crack-head marketing”. The MAJORITY of marketing activities by small businesses are powered by crack-head energy. Always chasing that next rush, that next high, without understanding of the damage they are doing to their business, usually in the form of wasted money. IF you’ve a very definite answer to number two above, marketing becomes uber simple. Notice I didn’t say easy, but simple.
What problems solve for who (target market)?
Where do you reach them (channels)?
What do you say to them over their customer journey to make them know, like, and trust you (messaging)?
How can pull them over the finish line to try you (conversion) in some small way?
